Inspiration February 9 >> Life In Limbo

I think I watched this whole video with my mouth hanging open. The world is such a beautiful place! And I had never heard of this athlete before, but I am so impressed.

Justin Timberlake’s new music video for Say Something gave me chills. What a cool idea for creating music! More of this, please.

I’d seen clips of Justin Baldoni’s TED talk online, but this week I took some time to watch the full thing and was super inspired by his point of view. I really feel like we’re in a big moment culturally, and the topics that he’s talking about here are so relevant and necessary within the larger conversations we’re having.

So moving to look back over Ellen’s career and really remember the huge impact that she has made in the world. (I cried.)

I loved this thread (despite how sad it is) about what palliative children had enjoyed most in life. So much wisdom lives here. Even though these seem like things “I already know”, they’re not things “I always practice.” Time to close that gap.

Laughed so hard at this collection of “new erotica for feminists” because of how spot-on it is. Also kind of hot? Just saying.

How does the head of Buzzfeed News manage technology and work-life balance? So fun and interesting to read the truth from the perspective of his 14-year-old son.

It’s been a pretty good week despite the cold and snow! I went to a candlelit yoga class, checked out an “Ideas Club” with my friends (and had a nice dinner after), went for a couple great walks in the park in the sunshine and spent time reading a great book. Best of all worlds! This weekend I’m eating fried cheese curds at a local brewery, having coffee with a friend who just got back from an epic road trip and hopefully going plant shopping! I hope you have a wonderful weekend too. xo.

Captain Awkward is back at it again! Laying down the epic advice about emotional labour and expectations and relationships. I am so thankful for this blog.

I really loved this story of how Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer worked together to close the pay gap as it pertains to women of colour. Really great, really important.

It was fun to read this post about Elise’s philosophy and process around making her own clothes. I love her mindset in most things, and getting inspired to just start and learn as you go is such a great feeling.

I went to Girls Night In book club for the first time this week and had a ton of fun! Free goodies, cool women, and a fun chat about a great book in a beautiful space? I believe these are in fact all my favourite things.

Last Friday morning I went to Creative Mornings and was really inspired (as always) by the speaker. This month it was Jordan Axani, who took us through a powerful anonymous sharing exercise called My Big Lie. It was really moving and thought-provoking.

Sorry for posting nearly every single episode of Hurry Slowly but I can’t help that it’s amazing!! I had so many great takeaways from this interview with Oliver Burkeman, including the question: “There are always going to be too many demands, so who do you want to make angry?”

One of my book clubs read Worry-Free Money this month and my favourite idea was the Inadequacy Influence: the concept that we have an urge to spend money whenever we feel like we can’t keep up, feel guilty, or feel that we aren’t good enough and money seems like the solution. Excellent read and a great discussion!

I am super tired after a full week – all good things, but full nonetheless. I got to help out on an interior design project for a couple days, go to a book club two nights in a row, and drink wine with my friends. What could be better? This weekend I’m helping out at a harvest table dinner, going for a lovely dog walk in the park and having brunch with my friends. It’ll be the perfect blend of relaxing and activity. I hope you have a wonderful weekend too! xo.

Inspiration January 26 >> Life In Limbo

I have been so moved by the women (over 190 at last count) testifying in the Larry Nassar trial. It’s incredibly painful to hear their stories, and absolutely staggering to see how many people he abused and assaulted – and let’s remember that the women testifying are only a fraction of his victims. But it’s also beautiful to see the strength of these women speaking truth to power.

In other news: how did I miss that an all-female Ocean’s movie was happening?! I grew up watching action and heist movies with my Dad and sisters and I love the genre. So nothing makes me happier than seeing women kicking ass in movies like Wonder Woman (my favourite movie of last year) and this trailer for Ocean’s 8! Cannot wait to see it.

I thought Samantha Bee did a really great job of explaining the current MeToo backlash and some of the nuance involved in the somewhat murky allegations against Aziz Ansari and others. “It doesn’t have to be rape to ruin your life. And it doesn’t have to ruin your life to be worth speaking out about.” FYI: MeToo doesn’t lack nuance, its critics do.

I found it really interesting to read about Ellen Pompeo’s experience negotiating her way to becoming television’s highest-paid actress. Also interesting to read about the pettiness in how the executives had previously refused to pay her even $5000 more than her co-star even though she was the lead character…

I binge-watched both seasons of Insecure this week after two of my closest friends have been telling me to watch it for months. People, this show is amazing! Omg! What was I doing waiting for so long!?When does Season 3 come to bless my life?!

This perspective perfectly encapsulates how I feel about the fine line between manifesting abundance and being reckless. “Visualise your dream life, sure. Do what you can now to start getting into that frame of mind, and take what steps you can toward living that life now. Just don’t overextend and commit to funding things now that you can’t yet afford.”

Lol! 7 Helpful tips on how to be miserable! But seriously though, this is funny and accurate and motivating. Especially the one about screen time – too real. I feel like I should re-watch this weekly. Daily, perhaps.

In trying to find a desktop wallpaper for my new computer (!) I re-discovered the Dress Your Tech archives on Design Love Fest! Countless pages of original artwork for your screens. Beautiful!

My highlights of this week were going to a great yoga class I won in an Instagram contest and watching the premiere of Rupaul’s Drag Race All Stars with friends! So fun. This weekend I’m going home for some much-needed time in the woods with the puppy. I hope you have a wonderful weekend too! xo.

PS. I am still reading The Power (pictured above) and damn it’s good.

Thank you for this reminder, Ann Friedman! Not every hobby is a side hustle, or needs to be, or should be. Your hobbies don’t need to make you money.

Introverts, it’s that time of year! Actually who am I kidding, it’s always the right time to cancel plans if you’re feeling too overwhelmed by life. Thanks to Girls Night In for writing some honest, awesome scripts for us.

One article on this topic was not enough for you? I present yet another guide to making plans that you actually want to keep and saying no to any plans that you don’t want to make. This one is super helpful too.

I like the idea that marketing just means being considerate to your people. Makes a lot of sense, and might make it easier for those of us who hate being too self-promotional. Remember that it’s *not* very considerate to make it hard to find out about you/see pictures of your stuff/find you online, etc.

Lately I have been really working on becoming a better plant parent, and I thought these were some good tips. Plus, the article’s photos are fodder for my plant addiction. Help.

Loved this article, which is all about the idea of protecting your time. My favourite takeaway was to switch from saying “I can’t do that” to “I don’t do that.”

This week I finished The Sellout and am almost finished Rest. The Sellout was wacky but I enjoyed it, even if I felt totally out of my depth intellectually. Rest is good and is reminding me to do more of what I know I need to do: go for walks, take breaks, prioritize vacation, detach from work.

I’ll be honest and say that this was not one of my more fruitful weeks in terms of inspiration. I have been feeling a bit down because of the constant cold (Trying not to complain! But it’s tough.) and lack of light, so my productivity and inspiration have been a little low. I’m still plugging away at my goals for January and my work, just with slightly less energy than usual. Here’s hoping that shifts next week! I hope you have a wonderful weekend. xo.
