031: Sarah Von Bargen on Living On Purpose

The Life In Limbo podcast is about building a life you love on the foundation of what’s most important to you. Each week I chat with an interesting person or share my own ideas in order to explore about how we can stay connected to our personal values, measure what matters most to us, listen to our own voices, and create a life we enjoy. 031: Sarah Von Bargen on Living On Purpose >> Life In Limbo

The podcast is back for season 4 with a bang today! I am so excited about this very special episode – I’m chatting with one of my favourite thinkers & teachers, Sarah Von Bargen of the blog Yes and Yes. If you’ve read any of my Inspiration posts over the years, you know that Sarah’s ideas have had a big impact on me personally and I’m always sharing her concepts with people both in my work and personal life.

In this episode we’re discussing her unique money philosophies, her own personal definition of success (and why we all need one of our own), the questionable ethics of much of the current online business world, the Authenticity Tax and how Sarah comes up with so many original ideas. This was such an exciting conversation to have and I hope you love the episode as much as I loved creating it with Sarah.

Some excellent tips here about how to use your phone less, but better. Some of these I was doing, but some were new and my phone is more efficient already!

A few hopeful facts about Notre Dame cathedral that made me feel a bit better. There are always bright spots in dark times!

When I was in the States over the weekend, I watched Shrill, a fictional series written by Lindy West, based on her book. It was so good! I think if you’re a Crave subscriber in Canada, you can watch it here as of this month.

This was a massive butt-kicker of an article and I’m happy to report I haven’t hit snooze on my morning alarm once this week (usually a very bad habit of mine). I never snooze emails as he’s writing about, but the principle is the same for alarms too.

Why and how to say more of the word NO, which James Clear calls “the ultimate productivity hack” and I tend to agree.

I have explored this website not at all, but it looks AMAZING. Look at all the good free stuff on the internet!  Movies, courses, books, audiobooks, etc.

Visiting the “Harry Potter library” at Cornell last weekend reminded me that I probably have a lot of good literary sight-seeing in my own city too! I liked this article with book-related tourism I can do at home.

This week completely flew by yet again! Last weekend in Ithaca was really special, you can read more about my trip on Instagram here and here. And then this week I was mostly absorbed in talking about and working on my masterclass at Make Lemonade, a coworking space here in Toronto. On May 23 I’ll be teaching a class called Do More In Less Time, and I’m so excited (and nervous) about it! The weather has been almost entirely cold and rainy this week, but at least the flowers are popping up and the blossoming trees are about to explode, so I’m thrilled. This weekend it’s my grandparents’ 60th anniversary party so I’m looking forward to spending time with family. I hope you have a wonderful weekend too! xo.

I discovered the podcast Going Through It with Ann Friedman this week and am a big fan! I love her style of interviewing and the stories I’ve listened to so far (Glennon Doyle & Antje Danielson) have been fascinating. Can’t wait to listen to the Hillary Clinton one!

In general, I would agree with this advice. But I would also amend it to say: unfollow anyone who makes you feel bad in any way. I liked this post on a similar note this week too.

I really loved this episode of Akimbo about the magic of inconvenience. “Convenience is the enemy of (pizza) quality.”

Reminder to artists & creatives & humans: give yourself a decade.

As somebody who is interested in finding a signature scent but is a total n00b to that kind of thing, I enjoyed this advice about how to do so.

I was excessively delighted by this adorable book with the best drawings and some surprisingly great advice!

Rebecca Jacobs is doing an Instagram challenge called Liberate Your Style, and it should be fun! I did her last one and really enjoyed it. Details here.

In case you missed it, I wrote about how to choose the next good idea to pursue (in your business or otherwise!) on my business blog this week!

By the time you read this, I will be in Ithaca, New York! One of my very best friends lives in NYC, so we decided to meet up halfway and spend a long weekend together. We plan to eat great food, explore the nearby waterfalls, check out the farmer’s market, go hiking near the grottoes, read some books, and talk non-stop for three days straight! I can’t wait. I hope you have a wonderful weekend too. xo.

Most inspiring for me this week was having the chance to interview one of my favourite original thinkers, Sarah Von Bargen! The episode will be out soon, but until then let’s all revisit her post about The Authenticity Tax, a concept that has truly changed the way I show up in my life.

Woohoo! Gmail now offers the ability to schedule emails without needing to use an add-on like Boomerang! This is great news. Looks like I’ll have to update my Inbox Zero course soon!

Brb, adding all of these to my to-read shelf and my library holds.

If you work from home or have trouble concentrating throughout the workday, Focus Mate could be a fun thing to try! Basically it’s a free service that sets you up with a virtual coworking buddy. Very intriguing.

Now THIS seems handy. Tunefind is a website that lets you look up all the music that played in the background of your favourite TV shows and movies. Just in case you forgot to Shazam!

A neat little list of tools that help you improve your writing. I also use the Yoast SEO plugin for my business blog posts and not only does it boost my SEO but I think it also makes my writing more succinct.

I started reading Joyful yesterday and already I feel like my eyes are open wider to my life and my environment. I can tell this one will be a game-changer for me!

Well, this week was a roller coaster! Lots of highs and lows, all mixed in together. That said, I’m happy to be where I am – if the first ten days of my 28th year are any indication, this year is primed to be transformative and wonderful. I just keep thinking of Elizabeth Gilbert’s eternally moving post, I Am Willing. She was writing about grief, but I think the concept applies in almost every facet of life. I am willing, I am willing, I am willing. “I am willing to be here for the duration of the mystery.” I hope you have a wonderful weekend, my loves. xo.
