February Goals

Here are my humble goals for February!

In February, I want to reach out to others. I want to initiate plans with my friends, especially the ones I don’t see very often. I want to try new recipes (baking and cooking!) and share the results. I’m continuing to plan my trip and trying to deal with all that comes with it, so I need to remind myself to be big and brave. I want to kickstart my creative life again, so I’ll be choosing to read books about creativity and doing my 750 Words every morning! Also, I want to hone in on my “be kind” goal from January and break it down to listening carefully, attentively, being fully present.

And how did my January goals go? Not bad, all things considered! I started to purge old, useless things I have around my house. I purged my hair (yay, short again!) and I love the result. I did a pretty good job of finding everyday beauty. The winter weather got me down a few times (when it was -42, for example, or when the entirety of downtown Montreal flooded – yes, literally flooded) but all in all I kept a grim smile on my face as much as possible. Even just recognizing how much I hate winter weather was enough to help me hate it a little less. Does that make sense? I did a fairly pathetic job of exercising at home (but did get very excited for the running season) – only a few sessions of yoga. Those were peaceful, at least. I did a pretty decent job of choosing reading, although many days I specifically chose not to read and watch crappy TV instead. At least I made a conscious choice at the time, even though in retrospect I wish I’d read instead! And finally: being kind. This is ongoing. I try. It sometimes slips my mind and I say something thoughtlessly, or am not as generous as I’d like, or am late for a rendez-vous. But it’s a process, and I try.

So far, I love this format of setting goals by the month. It really helps me re-adjust and refine my focus depending on what’s on my mind right now! Awesome.

Who Are You Doing a Favour?

DSC_0071

So I have a new mantra that’s entered my life lately, and it’s shaking up the way I think about a few things. Wanna hear it?

Who exactly are you doing a favour?

This warrants some context, so hear me out. The first thing you should know is that I can be very lazy when it comes to my bedtime routine. As in: will bargain with self, will attempt to trick self or persuade self out of doing the parts of the routine that are “boring”. I like to think (for all you Freudians out there) that this is the part of my day where the immediate needs of my “Id” (who only cares about things like food, sleep and sex) are quite obviously trying to overthrow the “shoulds” of my “Ego” (who cares about more long-term, realistic endeavours).

Yet all that aside, the point is that I’m constantly telling myself “Oh, I don’t need to wash my face today! One day won’t matter!” or “Look, if I don’t remove my eye makeup tonight, what’s it going to hurt?” or “As long as I floss most of the time, what’s the issue?”. I even sometimes tell myself that I should brush with my regular toothbrush instead of my electric toothbrush – my brain seems to think that the regular toothbrush is somehow a vacation from the electric one, which makes no sense at all.

What I’m trying to get across is that nowhere is it more obvious than in my night-time routine that I am always trying to “get out of” something. Something I know full well to be important, but I just don’t want to do. The logical part of my brain knows it’s really not even a hassle by any stretch of the imagination, but that doesn’t stop the whiny, juvenile part of my brain from wanting to fall straight into bed without so much as brushing my teeth (which I’m proud to say has never actually happened).

A couple weeks ago, while I was having this internal debate, (the different parts of my brain holding trade-offs and negotiations) that phrase popped into my head: Who exactly are you doing a favour? Who are you “cutting some slack”? Who are you “giving a break”? Because it sure as heck can’t be ME, now can it? I’m the one who will be paying for it three months down the line when my dental hygienist “tsk tsks” over the state of my gums, won’t it? (Lightbulb! An A-HA moment!)

Perhaps this is an oft-told story of long-term consequences vs. short-term desires. And yes, I completely agree that this will not be new information to anyone. And yet: it’s much easier for that idea of being proactive (not lazy) to come to mind now that I have a little phrase that sums it up so neatly. I find it’s hard to hold any sort of abstract idea in my head as I go about my day, but having a phrase means that the idea pops up whenever it’s needed (and it’s often needed). When choosing what to eat, when choosing how to spend my spare time, when pondering pursuing something – these have been times in the last couple weeks when that little mantra has sprung up in my head, and it’s been so instructive.

As I lay in bed last week, wanting so desperately to skip my morning class. Who are you doing a favour? (didn’t skip). When I came home last night from work, really hungry and wanting badly to order in food or make something elaborate. Who are you doing a favour? (ate a few almonds instead). You get the picture. This little phrase has really been re-focusing me in a great way.

I’ve also written about mantras here and here.

Everyday Beauty: Week 3

Seems like the weeks are flying by. Did I say that in a post recently? I can’t even remember, because the time is going by so quickly. It was a relatively relaxed week – I worked pretty much all of last weekend, sneaking in time for a nice dinner with my friends. I went to see the Habs game and wore my only piece of Habs memorabilia – and then they lost.. oh well.  This past week has also been *totally frigid* so I’ve spent a lot of time inside my very-un-insulated apartment with my space heater and some candles. I think I’m in the market for a few new candles, I’m finally using mine and they’re getting low. I’m kind of excited about it.

We went to see Gangster Squad on Tuesday (overall: meh/violent, Emma Stone: obsessed, Ryan Gosling: I love my husband, what can I say?) and then a student production of West Side Story on Thursday (!! loved it) so that was a fun break from the lonely studying. I read a book called Heads in Beds because I was getting stuck on another book, and I flew through it and am ready to get back to reading other things. It’s a book about working in hotels, and boy can I relate (as a waitress) to some of his stories about annoying customers!

I’m looking forward to this coming week. Next Friday my friends and I leave for Ottawa, just for the weekend for Winterlude! It’s fun to have a  lovely mini-vacation planned. Other than that I’m going to keep doing my readings, reading for fun, burning candles, and cooking good food. Happy Friday everyone! xo.

Just A Few Chocolate Chip Cookies

DSC_0003

Because today I woke up to a wind chill warning.

Because sometimes your heart hurts for no real reason (maybe due to that freaking ‘feels like’ -35 weather!).

Because maybe you (like me) always make baked goods and then never really want to finish them after two or three.

Because you want something sweet to go with your evening tea.

Because you want to celebrate getting through a particularly stressful day/week/hour.

Because you just want to, dang it!

Because of all these totally valid reasons, I give you the ultimate recipe for just a few chocolate chip cookies. I can attest: these are the perfect chocolate chip cookies. They’re not only perfect because they take approximately fifteen minutes from ingredients to eating, but they’re the perfect texture and chew as well. I could not recommend them more highly!

The recipe is like the holy grail of cookie recipes. It is designed explicitly to make only two cookies, so no bizarre trying to split an egg in half, yolks, whites and all – it simply calls for the egg yolk! Easy peasy. When I made this recipe, it ended up making five cookies, not two. But considering that I made no alterations to the recipe, I can only assume that the author makes much larger cookies than I, and so I am perfectly justified in having eaten all of them over the course of 24 hours.

And just like that, I’m ready to make them again. Lord help the mister who comes between me and my chocolate chip cookie.

Happy Wednesday! Make it (mulled) Wine Wednesday to chase away the cold.

xo.

Update: I made them again, and they were just as good the second time (and made 6 [!] decent-sized cookies). Long live this recipe.
