Inspiration September 8 >> Life In Limbo

The beauty and bravery and love in this post is off the charts. I read it twice.

I made this summer tomato pie for dinner at my mom’s the other day and it was delish. Thanks, JTB!

Also this week, I signed up for Toronto’s bike share program! I’ve happily used Bixibikes in Montreal and Citibike in NYC, and thought this would be a great way to love where I’ll be living (a la this book).

Ways to feel happier + calmer in 10 minutes. After reading, I promptly lay down, did feet up the wall pose, and felt better.

Simple-but-awesome tips for maintaining (or beginning) healthy habits.

Some thoughts to think before jumping into a heated conversation. Important stuff.

I re-read this great post this week and it was still so helpful.

I didn’t do much online reading this week, but I spent a lot of time with my mom’s golden retriever puppy and finished three books, so I’m okay with it. This weekend, I get to see a good friend I haven’t seen in person in two and a half years!! Even writing that out, I can barely believe it’s been so long. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend too. xo

Book Club: July & August

Book Club July & August >> Life In Limbo

I absolutely love to read, and I love to share the books I like best with other people. Every few months here on the blog I choose my favourites from what I’ve read lately and write about them. As always, you can see everything I’m reading on my Goodreads profile. You can also check out what I’m reading at #stephlovestoread on Instagram.

According to Goodreads, I’m 11 books behind on my reading challenge for 2016. That said, I am fairly sure that if I were to look back over the past few years, I’d find the same exact pattern of realizing that I was quite behind on my reading as summer comes to a close and the seasons change. Which is to say, I’m not too concerned.

If you’re not following Elizabeth Gilbert’s posts on Facebook, I suggest you do it now! I even set it up so I see her stuff at the top of my newsfeed, which has been amazing. This is one of my favourite posts she’s ever written, on having the “wrong” emotion: “We are complex and unique and perfect and true, and there is no one way to feel.” I love this so much, I can’t even tell you.

You hereby have permission to do the hard thing. (Hint: this is not always selling your possessions and moving abroad – sometimes, that’s the easier thing.)

How great is this idea for an easy, lovely birthday tradition?

I’m resolving to use a piece of my day for cultivating peace of mind. I like these simple ideas.

It can be so hard to know how exactly to help when someone is getting harassed in some way. This guide is designed for helping when encountering Islamophobia, but it’s a wonderful technique for any kind of awful social encounter.

Recently I’ve been loving videos from the Clean My Space Youtube channel. They’re well produced and super helpful, and it’s nice that they’re based in Toronto (my new home!). I didn’t think I would be into learning about cleaning…but I am?

Life has felt (and been) a bit overwhelming lately, so coming back to my little routines like these weekly posts is a nice way to stay grounded. I’ve been thinking a lot about how I am rarely creative when my life is in flux (or in limbo, if you will) – it’s only when I start to feel settled that I feel like making, writing, and taking photos. Yet another reason I’m excited to stay put for awhile!

This weekend I’m helping my sister move into a new apartment, seeing friends, and hopefully hanging out with my mom’s new golden retriever puppy. I hope you have a wonderful weekend too. xo.

My Next Big Adventure

DSC_4935

The last few months have been a whirlwind for me. Even the last week alone has been a blur as I, yet again, choose to make over my life.

Ever since I graduated from university I’ve been finding my way, one little piece at a time. There have been so many moments over the last few years when I didn’t know what life would look like even three months down the line. Times when I didn’t know where I’d be living, how I’d be making money, or where in the world – literally – I’d be.

My trajectory has bounced across several countries and time zones and I’ve had so many adventures that seem surreal when I look back on them now. I’ve been so unbelievably lucky, and I’ve also made my own luck. I’ve taken risks and gained friendship and love and more confidence in myself than I knew I was capable of.

There’s a Steve Jobs quote I love that I feel applies here (and to all of us, always):

“You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever.”

And one from Cheryl Strayed, which is tattooed on my heart:

“Let whatever mysterious starlight that guided you this far, guide you onward into whatever crazy beauty awaits.”

I wrote a post that included that second quote on the day I finished university. I had no idea how much crazy beauty awaited me then, and truthfully I still don’t now. All I know is that Steve & Cheryl are absolutely, 100% right. I can only connect the dots looking backwards, and some mysterious starlight is absolutely guiding me onward.

Next Big Adventure >> Life In Limbo

Last week, I chose to end my relationship and move to Toronto. These were two big, scary decisions that I agonized over for weeks beforehand, for lots of personal, complicated reasons. But they were beautiful decisions too, made with love and care and a sense of abundance.

The last time I lived on my own in Canada, it was in a sweet, colourful apartment in Montreal that I filled with projects and good food and friends and plenty of love and cake. That apartment was magic, and I still miss it sometimes. At the time though, I got restless and I wanted to see the world, so I packed it all away and started my adventures.

Three years later, and I’m ready for another kind of adventure – building a life and a home for myself near all my loved ones. I’m happy to say that I now know where I’ll be living three months from now and beyond, and that feels really good. I keep getting excited about tiny little things like coming home for the weekend, or exploring bulk grocery stores in my neighbourhood, or how far of a walk it’ll be to the beach (15 minutes! Hallelujah!).

All this to say: I’m trying to trust. I’m trying to let go. I’m trying to let things feel easy. I’m trying to have an open mind and an open heart. I’m trying to enjoy each moment as it comes and be grateful. If I have learned anything over the past few years, it is this.

PS. Somehow over the past few months I had forgotten that my word of the year was light. I love that I could remember it here, now, and that it came back to me in such a beautiful way.
