October Faves + Wishlist

Wishlist October

1. e.l.f. All Over Stick in Pink Lemonade 2. H&M Chelsea boots 3. ONA The Lima Camera Strap 4. 8 Seconds Graphic Tee 5. Gap Denim Vest 6. GoPro Hero 3 7. Kate Spade Heart of Gold Idiom Bracelet 8. Lightroom + Photoshop Creative Cloud 9. iPhone 5s

Just like last month, some of this stuff are things I’ve been loving lately, and the others are things I’m wishlisting. That e.l.f. color stick is such a nice shade of pink – it goes on really bright but blends really well. Plus it costs about $2, somehow. Even though I’m not usually one for writing on shirts, I’ve been wearing that graphic tee nonstop. It’s so soft and cozy and matches well with my denim vest. It’s the first jean jacket-type thing I’ve had since I was a kid and I’m very obsessed. I thrifted mine here in Korea but that Gap one is very similar.

I am thisclose to signing up for creative cloud so that I can experience Lightroom. I was thisclose to buying those boots at H&M this weekend but decided they were too expensive. I’m still on the hunt for something similar. The camera strap that came with my camera (approximately 5 years ago!) has finally started to show its age and is peeling like crazy. I think it might be time to invest in a lovely new one. Also, as I’m starting to plan my trip through South East Asia after my contract’s done here, I’m hearing the siren song of the GoPro. I just think the little bangle is pretty and witty. And of course, an unlocked iPhone 5 (the camera! the speed! the beauty!) will be on the wishlist until the end of the time. I’m still using my uber-slow iPhone 4 (not even S) but don’t use the camera anymore because it’s so awful.

As always, I’m counting my blessings for all the awesome things (both material and not) I’m lucky enough to have in my life. It’s funny, even as I was making this post I was thinking “I don’t really need anything else though, really..” My life is so great as it is.

Good Causes: September + October

Causes-S+O

One of my favourite personal goals for the year has been making a conscious effort to contribute to good causes. As I wrote on the page where I’ve been documenting the various organizations I’ve contributed to, I was ashamed last year when I was helping my grandmother organize her paperwork relating to her charitable donations for the year. I’d donated only about $20 over the course of the whole year to my friends’ causes, and it was not because I couldn’t afford it. It was just because I didn’t prioritize giving the way I actually believe in giving.

It only recently occurred to me that I should start profiling the organizations I’ve been supporting. These are causes that I really believe in, that I think are doing truly awesome work. So going forward I’m planning to share the organizations I’m supporting here on the blog, just in case you’re looking for a good cause to support as well.

Future Former Millionaire

This was a fun one I heard about from the World Domination Summit. Steven’s big idea is to get a $1 donation from a million people, and then give it all away to good causes. I’m not sure yet what he’ll donate to or even how much he’s donated, but I contributed my $1 even just because I think this idea is totally rad.

Pencils of Promise

I donated to PoP earlier in the year after reading the excellent autobiography of the founder. They build schools, train teachers, and give “scholarships” to children in developing areas of the world. It’s such an awesome organization. I donated again in September because they had an awesome campaign through a sponsor – they were matching donations up to $25,000.

Kiva

I adore Kiva, and have been donating regularly this whole year. Since it’s all loans, not donations, I usually re-invest the loans as they are repaid to me. I want to eventually donate to a business in every country on Kiva! You can learn more about Kiva here.

Run For the Cure

My aunt was raising money for the run to end breast cancer. I have a few issues with the pink campaigns for breast cancer – a great documentary on the topic is Pink Ribbons, Inc – but regardless I absolutely hate cancer and I think that awareness and fundraising are good things. Plus, I wanted to support my aunt.

The Human Voicebank

I didn’t actually donate money to this cause (there’s no option to, otherwise I would have) but I did donate both time and my voice, so it makes the list. I wrote more about this project here. It looks like the beta recording has been put on hold but I’ll be checking in regularly to see if there are any updates.

I’m always interested in hearing about the causes that are doing awesome work in the world, so if you have any that you’re a big fan of, please let me know in the comments below.

I’ve been doing a lot of listening, learning and thinking about giving this year. Two things that stand out as having shaped my thinking are the book I mentioned above, Thrive by Ariana Huffington, and this excellent episode of the TED Radio Hour about giving. There are some seriously great ideas in all three.

You can see all of the good causes I’ve supported this year right here.

September Faves + Wishlist

Wishlist September

1. Teeki Stardust Pants 2. Not That Kind of Girl 3. Vinyasa Scarf 4. Cold Cup 5. Moisturizer SPF 25 6. Busan Fireworks Mug 7. Nike Free Fits 8. Mayari Sandals 9. Tote

In addition to my Lately posts, which tend to talk about the ideas and rituals I’ve been into throughout the month, I thought it might be fun to show you the things I’ve been loving each month, as well as some of the things on my wishlist.

That cold cup has been my absolute fave at work lately, when I have my small daily iced coffee. It also works great for sipping water consistently! The mug was a Starbucks local special edition to commemorate the upcoming 2014 Fireworks Festival, and I bought it as a gift to myself after I started drinking hot lemon water every night but only had tiny mugs I’d have to fill up almost 3 times to be happy. I started using moisturizer with sunscreen for the first time ever this month and I absolutely love it. When I put it on I always feel like I’m doing something awesome for my skin. I’ll be looking for a more eco-friendly one on iHerb after this one’s done. I’ve lived in those sandals ever since I bought them in Kyoto in August, they’re the only shoes I wear except for my running shoes. I’m actually dreading cooler weather because I won’t be able to wear them as much. And lastly, I got that tote on sale at H&M (mine is more of this colour) and it instantly improved my style approximately 100 fold. I absolutely love it.

I’ve been lucky to have many awesome things in my life this month! The other things (mostly workout wear, funnily enough!), are things I’m adding to my wishlist for possible future purchases.

My Favourite Tool for Reading More Books (For Free)

How to Read More Books For Free

If you follow my blog, you probably know that I like to read, a lot. It’s easily my favourite activity, and definitely the one I’ve been doing the longest. Reading, for me, is the easiest way to learn more, challenge myself, become a more interesting person, grow, understand other people and the world better, and feel like my days are longer and richer. It’s also the simplest, cheapest way I know to do all those things.

That being said, books can be expensive, which is why I think our greatest achievement of human history has been the library. What else in our society do we offer people for free!? I find it nothing short of amazing that the institution of the library has stuck around this long, especially since we now charge money for absolutely everything else. I am so proud that we humans have recognized the power and beauty of books and decided to offer them to anyone, anywhere, for free.

I am also so excited that libraries have moved with us into the digital age. Sure, the idea of a “digital library” seems a bit silly at first, since I guess we could easily make thousands of digital copies and give one to anyone who wants one, but I think somehow that would be bad for the business of books and authors. I personally don’t mind the current digital format of having a few weeks to read a book before it has to go back to the “library”. It feels normal and it makes perfect sense to me: even though it’s a digital file, it’s still a library, and the books are only to borrow.

How to Read More Books For Free

So for anyone wondering how on earth I manage to read 75 books a year and still pay my bills every month, Overdrive + my library cards are the answer. Overdrive is an app available for iPad, Android, Kindle, and computers that allows you to access the digital collections of your library, for free.

I currently hold two library cards – one in Oakville where I’m from, and one in Montreal where I went to school. Each library has its own digital collection and they choose which new books to buy like at any library, so my two libraries are slightly different in their content. Often one has a book that the other doesn’t, so I’m grateful to still hold both cards at the moment.

Whenever I add a new book to my never-ending to-read list, I check and see if one of my two libraries has it. More often than not, they do, and I either borrow it right away or put it on hold. Getting emails saying I have a book on hold that is ready to be borrowed is like Christmas! I absolutely love it when I’m able to read a book I’d been hearing so much hype about for free. Also, the digital libraries are getting better and better all the time, and it’s exciting to see that they usually have hot new books available if you’re willing to wait a few days. If the library doesn’t have a book, I choose to read something different (there’s always something else to read!), buy it on Amazon, or look for it at a bookstore.

Digital libraries are perfect for me because I live in a foreign country right now and don’t have access to many English books. I usually read on my iPad mini, which I realize is a privilege I am lucky to have. However I will say that before I had my tablet, I used to read the occasional book on my computer (not the most convenient, but it gets the job done!), and I’ve started downloading audiobooks through the app to listen to from my phone when I’m running or otherwise on the go. So there are other ways to access this content if you’re interested but don’t have a device like an iPad or Kindle.

If you love to read as much as I do, Overdrive might change your life the way it changed mine. It’s completely free and very easy to use, and I absolutely love having so much amazing content right at my fingertips. If you’re interested but not sure how to get started, they have an awesome Help section with several informative videos.

By the way if you’re a reader, let’s become friends on Goodreads! I love seeing what other people are reading and what they think of books. Happy reading!
