Life

Summer 2.0

The seasons have changed for me, here in Busan. The weather got cooler overnight, though we’ve still had days like today that were blazing hot and sunny. But whenever it starts cooling down, it instantly feels like fall and brings up all kinds of nostalgia and feelings and memories. I love the fall, but this year it’s been feeling like life is going by really quickly and that the seasons of my life are happening faster than ever. I’m sure this is not going to change anytime soon, which is why I’m so glad I decided to try and document my year here in Korea through videos. Over the past month, I didn’t shoot as much and as a result a lot of things are missing from this video. Even so, I’m so happy that even a few of the great memories I have got preserved this way.

I’ve been experiencing so much in the past 6 months since I arrived in Korea – so many ups and downs, but mostly ups. The second half of summer had a different feeling from the first – more growing and thinking was going on, lots of dinners out and beach days and my solo adventure in Japan. Life was busy in August, but we still managed to enjoy our summer evenings, celebrating often with picnics and wine. I saw a ton of gorgeous sunsets and a few sunrises, went kayaking and surfing, learned some acro yoga, read some good books, and soaked up as much of the summer as I could. It was such a great one.

The video this time is short and sometimes wobbly but always sweet.

24 Before 24: Get a Manicure

DSC_4975

I have never been much of a nail person. In fact, I’m probably about the furthest thing from a nail person – I’ve always been a horrible nail biter. It’s a habit I want to quit, so that’s why “get a manicure” made it onto my 24 list. It was there to represent the fact that I’d stopped biting my nails, at least long enough for them to grow out to an acceptable manicure length. I also wanted to see what it would be like to have a manicure in Korea, the land of perfect nails.

Turns out, getting a manicure in Korea is not as simple as back home. Nail shops are regularly staffed with two or more ladies who tend to sit around on their phones when the shops are empty, as they often are. But if you walk in during one such time, as my friends and I did at a half dozen (empty) places one Sunday morning, they frown and say that you need an appointment. Or if only one of them is doing nails and the other two are just sitting around – still, you need an appointment. Many places seem to only take one customer at a time, one per hour regardless of their number of employees, so it’s really a wonder there are as many studios in business as there are. This is one of the things I don’t quite understand about Korea.

However! After learning my lesson, I dropped by a nail studio in the lobby of my old apartment building on my way to work the other afternoon and made an appointment for a few hours later. Happily, the girl at the place I chose was friendly and welcoming and when I went back I had no idea I’d be in for such a treat. I asked my good friend and fashionista Adrienne for nail colour advice (I believe I said “what nail trend is really hot right now?!”) and she gracefully acquiesced. For my $15, I got the whole shebang – cuticle care, a hand massage, nail colour, and then free star decals! I don’t love them, but my nail artist liked me and wanted to give them to me for free and who was I to say no!?

We actually had a lot of fun, despite the language barrier. She and I listened to some Maroon 5 and Taylor Swift on my phone (after I found out she liked them), and spoke some broken English to each other; she also gave me a plate of noodles to eat and started following me on Instagram. For a nail newbie, it was pretty much the best manicure ever.

And I’m very happy with the results! I love the colour, could do without the decals, and am really pleased that I managed to grow out my nails to the point where they look nice. I never thought I was capable of having nails that looked pretty – I thought they just didn’t grow properly. Luckily I was wrong, and I’m looking forward to treating myself to manicures in the future. I might just be a nail person after all!

Abundance Ideas / 02

DSC_4737

We’re eight months into the year, but I still think about my word for the year, abundance, almost every day. It’s become like a mantra to me, humming in the background especially when I’m around people or in situations that make me feel exactly the opposite of abundant. It’s like a gentle reminder in the back of my head that says “you don’t have to think about it like this”. It’s not that I bounce through life feeling joyous and constantly abundant, but I don’t really think that’s how life works. I’m learning that it’s all about course-correcting your inevitable small, petty thoughts so that you can live a full, rich life.

Easier said than done, of course. In the past few months since my first abundance ideas post, I’ve had a lot of ups and downs and challenges both big and small. I’m sure we all have.

There was that time when I lost my job and my apartment, and everything was so scary and uncertain. I remember just chanting “abundance” to myself, and believing so deeply that I was going to find a way to make the situation work out on my own terms. People were telling me I’d have to move an hour away from all my friends, or that I should take the first job I was lucky enough to get, but all of that felt wrong and small to me. At times I felt like maybe I was being naive by believing that everything was going to work out exactly as I wanted it to, but in the end it was the naysayers who had it all wrong because I ended up in my ideal situation. I learned that I’m not interested in people’s doomsday thoughts and worries, because thus far they have never been true.

Another time, I left the booking of my hostels in Japan until only a week before and everything seemed like it was sold out. I panicked, thinking I’d have nowhere to stay (an absurd, scarcity kind of thought), or that I’d have to change hostels every night. From that I learned a different kind of abundance: there are more options than there appear to be. Instead of throwing up my hands on Hostelworld, I Googled other booking companies, did some detective work, and finally decided to call the hostel itself. They told me there was one free bed on the night I wanted and everything was magically resolved. And then when I arrived, it was a whole other kind of abundance – it hadn’t been my first choice, but it was perfect: ideal location, cozy and comfortable.

When I heard two friends were going to live together back home, I instantly got all kinds of small, petty thoughts about feeling left out, left behind and forgotten. I was sure that they’d become closer as friends and love each other more, which in my scarcity-brain equated to them loving me less. I had to remind myself that of course, love is an unlimited resource, and love is not, as another friend recently reminded me, transferrable. We love everybody in a different way, and loving one person and becoming closer to them does not diminish your love for anyone else in your life. Love doesn’t work that way.

And then there are all kinds of other small situations where scarcity and abundance battle it out in my brain, whether it’s about choosing where to go on vacation or how much money I’m spending or making an appointment or choosing the right movie time or dealing with the petty frustrations of life in a foreign country. Life doesn’t always work out as planned but it usually works out better than expected. Abundance teaches me over and over to think outside the box, shun the pointless, useless small-mindedness and negativity, and go bravely on faith despite my fears. It’s taught me so much so far, and I can’t wait to see what I learn in the rest of 2014.

A few more links and quotes about abundance I’ve noticed over the past few months:

More than enough.

“It is when we give that we feel most abundant. Giving sends a message to the universe that we have all we need. We become virtuous by the practice of virtue, responsible by the practice of responsibility, generous by the practice of generosity, compassionate by the practice of compassion. And we become abundant by giving to others.” -Arianna Huffington, Thrive

“There’s room for all of us. There’s enough success, money, and love to go around. There is no scarcity, really, unless we choose to look at life through that lens.” This whole article from Yes and Yes is so excellent.

Lately | July

Lately July

Excited about the acro yoga workshop that I’m going to be taking this month, starting tonight!

Adjusting to my early-hours summer schedule at work but really enjoying having my evenings free.

Eating a lot of kimchi-jeon bought at the local grocery store and chimichangas from the local Korean-Mexican place.

Listening to RadioLab (newly discovered to me), Drake, and The 1975.

Reading some awesome summer books and adding so many to my to-read list. Standouts lately: The Vacationers, The Blue Bistro, and Of Mice and Men.

Trying to do a better job of staying in touch with my beloved people back home. Thank goodness for Facetime, Voice Memos, and cheap Skype rates.

Thrilled about the small-but-significant-to-me response I’ve been getting about my shop! One of my photos was mentioned on Yes and Yes last week.

Less-than-excited about the fact that July and August are the rainy season in Korea, and that I am going to have to say goodbye-for-now to one of my very good friends on Wednesday.

Looking forward to trying surfing one of these weekends, taking mini vacations on the long weekends we have coming up, getting acupuncture, enjoying fall in Korea, and making plans for the future.

Feeling grateful, happy, and getting back to normal after some stressful weeks.

P.S. I know it’s not July anymore, but these “Lately” posts are just meant to summarize my life during a particular time, and this post is pretty indicative of how I was feeling all through July and early August.
