3/10: Circle Scarf

I made a scarf! With my own two hands.

I’ve learned to knit a handful of times in my life, but I think this is the time that’ll stick. My Grandma’s going to be so proud (hi Grandma!). I re-taught myself from Knitting Help videos, but it’s a tricky thing to learn from videos. I had several false starts, especially with casting on. I’m using a very basic casting on technique because I simply could not get any of the other ways to work for me. It ended up being fine.

I chose Softee Chunky by Bernat, in Bronze. Honestly, I know next to nothing about yarns, I just chose the softest ones in the colours I wanted. I now have quite a few different colours in this style, I like it a lot. It’s 100% acrylic, but it’s been soft enough so far, fairly easy to knit with, and pretty cheap.

I knit in stockinette stitch, so alternating between knitting and purling. I’m making a blanket right now, and for it I’m doing just plain knitting, and I like how it looks too.

One problem I have with the scarf is that it’s a bit large to hold itself up around my face in the cold. I might try and take it in somehow. But I love the pop of colour, and have worn it a few times already. I didn’t do any measurements (unless you count with my eyes) but maybe next time it’d be preferable to use a pattern. Oh well, just practicing!

I’m having a lot of fun with knitting – very soothing. I’m getting better at doing it without looking, which means my hands have something to do when I read or watch tv. I still have a really long way to go – I still know next to nothing about knitting – but it’s enjoyable, and productive!
