Maybe you need to hear this too: you are allowed to change your mind. You are allowed to pause, re-assess, and choose a new direction. You don’t have to stick to something that’s not working, and you don’t have to beat yourself up for trying something new.
Gretchen Rubin talks about Upholders experiencing the phenomenon of “tightening”, which is the idea that once an expectation is established, people of this tendency find it very difficult to loosen their standards or change course. And while I’m not an Upholder (I’m a Questioner to my core!), I definitely experience this same phenomenon.
Like I shared yesterday, I have a tendency to be a little bit all-or-nothing in my thinking and behaviour. It’s hard for me to not feel like a failure if I don’t meet my habits and goals perfectly. And if I decide something isn’t working so well for me anymore, it’s hard to not just chalk that up as me “giving up” or “being lazy”. I question my motives and worry that I’m just caving in to resistance.
So today my message to myself is: it’s okay to change your mind. Not every habit or behaviour is going to work for you! If it’s not working, you can pivot. If it’s not bringing you joy or better results, you can stop. That’s not you failing. It’s you making an informed choice with the information you have available to you. The end.
PS. This might mean that I stop trying to blog on weekends and go back to journaling those days instead. It also might mean that I take “zero-in time” out of my Super Seven, since it doesn’t seem to be doing much for me. Experimentation is good! Having a light touch is even better. :)
