22 Favourite Moments

22

Looking back on the year is one of my favourite things to do. I’m turning 23 today, and as always I feel totally blessed and happy to be so fortunate in my life. I have so much love, such good friends, a kind and caring family, and I have been lucky enough to experience so many wonderful opportunities. It’s so easy to get bogged down in everyday problems or stress about the future, but even as I write this, I realize how lovely my life truly is in the grand scheme of things. I also realize that this list makes it sound like all I had this year were amazing moments, but I don’t want to glamorize my life – that’s definitely not true. I’ve had my fair share of hard, painful, challenging, lost and lonely moments this year too. But when I look back in twenty years, these extraordinary and extraordinarily ordinary moments are the ones I want to remember. So here’s to my 22 favourite memories from the past year, in no particular order.

***

Swimming in the sea looking back on the cliffs of Positano with friends from Montreal who were serendipitiously in town on the same day I was. I remember marvelling in the beauty of my surroundings and at the incredibly beautiful synchronicity of the world.

The road trip I took when I moved home from Montreal to Toronto with one of my best friends. I’d been up almost the whole night before, staring out at the blurry neon lights of the city from her apartment, and I was nervy. I drove us home and I was a bundle of emotions and kind of jumpy but we listened to a lot of top 40 and had singalongs and stopped to eat onion rings outside of a highway rest stop in the late afternoon light, and it was perfect.

22-5

Being on a boat with another best friend in a little cove in the Adriatic sea. We sunbathed and went for long swims and ate crackers and chips and drank cool beer and listened to Drake and the songs of a guy I’d dated and the White Panda, all off of my iPod without speakers and we giggled a lot. We felt like Beyoncé, except on a very small boat and with less good snacks. Also on that gorgeous trip: the time we followed the sound of a ringing bell and found a donkey.

Finally nailing the balance of a headstand after so many failed attempts (and crashes and bangs).

22-9

The first time I found the beach here in Busan. It was this mix of relief and joy and it made me feel calm and alive and refreshed. All I could think about was how blessed I felt to be spending a year only a fifteen minute walk from this kind of paradise.

The afternoon I spent with Laura in Toronto, eating delicious vegan food from Hogtown and recording the podcast in the sunshine at Christie Pits Park, playing with the leaves, and people-watching.

22-2

Seeing my family, including my little Grandma, in the crowd at my convocation ceremony.

22-1

The drive with one of my best friends all along the coastal highway that we took to Whistler. We ate strawberries and sweet potato chips, listened to Lana Del Ray and Beyoncé (of course), and I must have exclaimed about a hundred times about how beautiful our surroundings were. Really, my whole trip to Vancouver makes the list.

A long, long, impromptu, funny, refreshing girl talk session with my lovely friends from high school on the bed in my childhood room.

22-3

The outdoor barbecue my Dad threw for my going-away-to-Europe party in his backyard. My grandparents drove down for it and we grilled and ate mangoes and laughed and it was so wonderful to have all my loved ones around.

Ringing in the New Year by making a mountain of homemade sushi with my family and then going to a hot yoga intention-setting workshop. I was in downward dog when it became 2014!

22-6

Eating a little picnic complete with baguette, cheese, tomatoes and a bottled peach cocktail on the banks of the Grand Canal in Venice. Actually, my whole time in Venice was beautiful, simple, and lovely. Other great memories: eating spaghetti while listening to one of the classical quartets play to a very small crowd one drizzly, rainy night was another wonderful moment. Finding the gorgeous bookstore that sits right on the water and is stacked to the ceiling. Drinking an aperol spritz on a stoop and watching the rain.

Getting to learn how to make gelato at the Gelato University in Bologna was so much fun (and super tasty). I loved Bologna so much, all the time I spent there was a dream.

22-4

The whole time I spent in Cinque Terre was also a dream. I watched sunsets, ate great food, hiked gorgeous trails and soaked up so much beauty.

Watching the most incredible sunset from the balcony of a monastery in Florence, eating “crema” flavored gelato.  I bought the homemade gelato from a monk, after I’d listened to them singing and praying in the crypt of a beautiful church.

22-10

Meeting my Grandma in Wales for a week. That time we spent together and with family was so very special.

Pintxos-bar-hopping with new friends in San Sebastian. One of the more delicious nights of my trip.

22-7

The first time I watched Iya Traore’s soccer freestyle show from the grass beside the steps of Sacré Coeur cathedral in Paris. I had been feeling lonely and sad (it was my first day of travelling solo) but seeing his show made me feel so inspired and alive and connected. Also in Paris: watching the finish line of the Tour de France. Learning how to dance West-Coast swing with new friends on the quais de la Seine. Eating a picnic on the grounds of a very old castle. Meeting up with my high school exchange student after 7 years.

Toad man. I will always be grateful for the few months I lived at home after Europe (yes, mom, really!). Even though those months were challenging and painful sometimes, they also held so many beautiful, hilarious, everyday moments I shared with my family.

22-8

The evening I spent at les estivales de Montpellier – their Friday night summer street festival. Fresh flowers, good food, live music, beautiful sunset.

The day I spent with my mom before I flew to Europe. We went hiking on the beautiful trails of Mount Nemo and then we went walking along the shore and down to the pier. We were both so nervous, but it was such a beautiful day. We had a similarly nervy day the day before I left for Korea – all we did was go to Shoppers Drug Mart for things I didn’t really need and then made fresh spring rolls at our kitchen table.

22-11

My lovely going awaygook party with the Korean flag cupcakes and the beautiful fruit platters that my beautiful sister cut for me, with lots of loved ones wishing me well.

Honorable mentions:

  • All the times I went for gelato. There were so many gelatos this year, and all of them incredibly delicious. Examples: 1, 2, 3.
  • All the times I watched the sunset. There were so many sunsets this year, and all of them stunningly gorgeous. Examples: 1, 2, 3.

Truly, the longer I spent thinking about this year, the more special moments I could think of. It was really hard to keep this list to only 22 things (you can see by the way I grouped several moments together to count as only one!), and for that I am incredibly grateful. Imagine that, I had too many wonderful moments this year to fit onto only one list! I love that. I love life. Here’s to 23!

My sister sent me this song last night and I haven’t stopped dancing ever since.

I Travel To Feel Lonely…On Purpose: I wish I had read this article before my trip to Europe. It speaks the truth.

My all-time favourite blogger Elise launched a podcast this week! I was so excited. She always creates such awesome content, I am really looking forward to next week’s episode already.

I love this instalment of “Dress Your Tech” from Design Love Fest. I set #4 as my desktop wallpaper.

This post from Adulting is so wise. I constantly have to remind myself to take things one step at a time.

I downloaded these actions for Photoshop Elements from A Beautiful Mess this week and have been happily playing around with them. They really make photos pop!

I only discovered 3191 Miles Apart this week (approximately 6 years late to this particular party) but I am totally in love with their aesthetic and the way they live their lives. Swoon.

This week I was completely obsessed (again) with Oh She Glows. I have never made a recipe of hers that was disappointing, and this week I was pinning about a hundred things I want to make from her site. Including these vegan lunches.

Such beautiful photos, and please can I have a glass of strawberry rhubarb sangria? Thanks!

I liked this idea of thinking of your day in terms of what you did instead of what you didn’t do. My word of the year, abundance, keeps showing up for me, which is awesome.

I ordered from iHerb for the first time, and it was awesome. I should be getting all my goodies that I can’t get in Korea (PEANUT BUTTER) next week. I am very excited. If you want to order from them, use my coupon code LWW752 to save $10!

This weekend, I’m going to celebrate my birthday with my friends here in Busan, and we’re also going to go to the Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival! Have a lovely weekend.

March

  1. Vegan cupcakes decorated with the Korean flag for my “going awaygook” party! (waygook is the Korean term for foreigner)
  2. The heavenly Haeundae beach, only a fifteen minute walk from my apartment! I feel so lucky.
  3. Me, hanging out at Haeundae. Note that it was warm enough to go without a jacket for most of that day! Cause for celebration.
  4. The view from inside a beautiful pavilion up high on Dalmaji hill.
  5. Dylan and I on a walk along the coast.
  6. The Song-do beach harbour front.
  7. An adorable hilltop park where we did some impromptu yoga.
  8. My friends Dylan and Mary overlooking the water.
  9. Me, upside down in Busan!
  10. Friends on a walk along the coast. We took this coastal walkway to find a park, but in the end the walkway itself was our favourite part! It offered the most stunning views of the water and the rocks below.
  11. On the bus up to the beautiful Beomosa temple.
  12. A glimpse of the gorgeous temple!
  13. On the bus on the way back down.
  14. Height differences between foreigners and native Koreans!
  15. My favourite pooch at the dog café we visited on a rainy, dreary Saturday.
  16. Me and the most cuddly kitty! This visit really brightened my day.
  17. Our friend Kendall took us to shabu shabu! It's a type of meal where you cook veggies in a pot of broth and then make your own spring rolls using rice paper. Then, once the broth has all but boiled away, you add rice and more veggies and stir it into a kind of porridge. Totally delicious!
  18. It's cherry blossom season here! I can't get enough of these gorgeous flowers. All the trees just exploded into bloom last week and I know they won't last long, so I am enjoying every minute.

A little glimpse of how I spent my March. As of Friday, I'll have been in Korea for an entire month, which is totally crazy. It's unbelieveable how fast that month went by! But as you can see from the photos, I've had an amazing time so far. I've been exploring temples, eating delicious food, seeing beautiful scenery, making great new friends and planning for upcoming adventures. In just a couple weeks I'll be spending the weekend in Tokyo!I'm happy with the little routines I've started to establish here, like a daily walk down to the beach and late-night yoga with my friend Dylan. I'm feeling relatively settled and happy, which is a great thing.

Instagram Tips: How To Fix an Instagram Hashtag When a Photo Doesn’t Show Up in Search Results

Insta5

UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2016:

Hi everyone! I’m sorry you’ve found yourself here on this page, and that your Instagram hashtags aren’t working – I know how annoying that is. The method I describe in the post below is no longer working for several users. Two things to know:

  1. If you are using a third-party app to post photos, such as Adobe Lightroom or Dropbox, that seems to cause the hashtags to not work.
  2. This seems to affect brand-new accounts more than established ones.

Unfortunately, I’m not an Instagram expert and I am not currently (in September 2016) experiencing this issue so I do not yet have the solution. I would hypothesize that Instagram may want to discourage overuse of hashtags, especially on new accounts, so as to limit “spam” accounts, but I’m not sure. Some people in the comments below have had luck submitting a help ticket to Instagram. Actually, there is lots of activity in the comments section of this post that I hope will help someone out. I will update the post if I learn more.

I recently started a daily photography challenge loosely based on the project #100HappyDays. I wanted to create my own hashtag in order to keep my photos grouped together and organized for me personally, so I chose one that nobody else had used yet, #stephlovestoday. I happily began tagging my photos with it and they would show up in the search results for that tag without a problem.

Then I noticed that one of my Instagram photos wasn’t showing up in the search results for that hashtag. I thought this was odd, since I’d never had any problems before. I did a bit of a Google search and finally found the information I was looking for, buried in the replies to a Yahoo Answers post. I’m sharing it here in the hopes that I can be helpful to someone who might be encountering the same problem I was!

Here’s what it comes down to: there are a few broken hashtags on Instagram. When you tag using those tags, they ruin it for all their hashtag friends and none of the other tags you use on that photo will show up in their respective search results.

I don’t have a definitive list of all the broken hashtags, so you’ll have to do a bit of trial-and-error if you’re encountering this problem. But here are a few to watch out for (in my experience):

  • #photography
  • #instagram
  • #love

These are all popular hashtags, so I think they all work at least sometimes, but if you’re encountering an issue with one of your photos not showing up for another tag, chances are one of these tags are causing an issue.

I’ll show you an example. Here’s a photo I took for my photography project. I tagged it with a few hashtags.

DSC_0229Unfortunately, the search results for my personal tag don’t show this photo, despite it being tagged!

DSC_0242How annoying. Luckily, I put all my hashtags into a comment. If you tagged your photo in the caption and not a comment, you’ll have to delete and re-post your photo for this fix to work.

Here’s how to fix it.

Insta1Locate the broken hashtag. Again, this is where trial-and-error might come into play, but for me it was definitely the #photography hashtag.

Insta2Click “Comment” underneath your photo and it’ll take you to the screen above. Swipe to the left, and then click the red trashcan to delete the comment.

Insta3Once you’ve identified the problem, you can tag to your heart’s content!

DSC_0223And happily, your photo will now appear in the search results for all the hashtags you used, including of course your own personal tag.

I hope this was helpful! If you have had a similar problem, share your experience in the comments.
