How To Use Social Media More Effectively

?? ??

On today’s episode of Guinea Pigging Green, we’re talking about social media. Now, I totally love Instagram and Twitter – I think that they’re awesome tools for sharing inspiration and beauty. Unfortunately, they also have a dark side if you’re not careful about how you use them. For instance, I’ll readily admit to checking for “likes” compulsively and feeling strangely competitive towards those with more followers than me.

So that’s why today’s episode is all about using social media more effectively, in ways that will make you feel good and that take advantage of the positive aspects of these platforms. Our jumping-off point for this episode was a great article from Relevant Magazine: 5 Questions to Ask Before Posting to Social Media. It really resonated with me and since then I’ve been sharing its ideas in conversations and trying to consciously keep them in mind whenever I’m posting content.

In the episode, we talk about finding intrinsic motivations (ie. finding enjoyment in the act itself) for using social media rather than extrinsic ones (ie. enjoying the act because you want the reward that will follow). Personally I find it rewarding and (intrinsically) motivating to seek out beauty in my everyday life, to practice my photography and see slow-but-steady improvement, to find a community of like-minded people and to curate a collection of photos that are special and beautiful to me. I try to focus on these motivations every time I start to fall into a downward spiral of comparison or greed.

I think that it’s possible for these platforms to be a positive part of our lives, but I think it’s important for us to use them in a healthier and more conscious way. You can find the episode, which I think is full of food for thought, on our blog or by subscribing to us on iTunes.

Lately | April

Currently AprilThrilled about the weekend I just spent in Tokyo.

Tired but it was worth it.

Proud of an article I just submitted.

Nursing a cup of hot water with honey and a dissolved vitamin C tablet.

Listening to my favourite podcasts every day on my walk and the Lana Del Rey album when I do errands.

Watching The Good Wife and loving it.

Appreciating all the beautiful Spring flowers blooming. I notice new ones appearing every day.

Missing my family and friends back home a little today, but…

Grateful (very) for the friends I’ve made here.

Putting pumpkin seeds in my morning granola.

Still obsessed with the beach and the waves.

Creating a lot more lately (blogging, podcasting, photographing, writing) and feeling excited about that.

Eating rice or quinoa bowls most nights.

Pinning lots of inspiration and yummy recipes to try.

Jumping around like a maniac doing Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred in my apartment after work these days.

Resolving to read more and read better, more interesting books.

Happy about my version of the #100HappyDays project and all the lovely everyday photos I’ve been taking as a result of making this intention. You can see them here.

Excited that Love Letter #1 is in the mail en route to its lovely recipient.

Having lots of thoughts about the (my) future.

Already planning for a restful, quiet weekend.

Trying to notice and actively appreciate the magic and the beauty of my days.

Working on staying present and grounded instead of being nostalgic for another place.

Impressed with myself that I’ve managed to create a life and routine here in Korea (!?) after a relatively short amount of time. I feel miles away from where I was in my last Currently post.

Loving the people I’m lucky enough to know, as always and for forever.

A Beautiful Mess never disappoints. Their photos of the rope-light sign that says relax and all the people relaxing in a hot tub with beers…that’s what the good life looks like.

I thought Nubby Twiglet’s advice to a young person wondering if they should immediately pursue their dream of starting their own business or wait to gain some experience and money was spot on and helpful.

Clementine Daily wrote about 5 mantras we should all memorize. There’s a lot of wisdom there.

How fun is this video of making and eating brunch? What is it about brunch that makes me want to throw brunch parties all the time?

ReciteThis is an awesome website that makes any text you want into amazing posters. I’ve printed a couple quotes off to frame and put up in my little apartment.

This travel guide for the Pacific North West made me want to pack my bags and head back to Vancouver for good. And then explore all the cities nearby, and then take a roadtrip across America, and then spend time in Montreal during the summer. Clearly, my travelling days aren’t over. Did I mention I’m going to Tokyo tomorrow? Ha.

My friend Laura posted about “staying above the line” and I love the concept: “Anything below the line represents things that inhibit us from reaching the greatest expressions of ourselves: self doubt, self pity, jealousy, anger, etc. Above the line, we are patient, empathetic, confident, compassionate and so on.”

Things to do when you are sad.

Everything Leo writes just seems to sit perfectly right with me. I loved this post about making it through tough journeys, especially the part about happiness being within: “If you can find happiness inside you, then no matter what’s happening externally, you can access this source of happiness.”

My friend Adrienne was published in xoVain this week! Her article is about a perfume and it’s wonderfully written. I love her style.

Spring abundance bowls!! Yes! I’m excited to try and make this bowl in Korea.

I think I should just have a big disclaimer at the bottom of these posts that says “and then obviously, it goes without saying, Marie TV this week was the bomb dot com!” because I feel like I link to her amazing content all the time. This week she’s talking about how the time someone wakes up relates to their productivity. How refreshing to see this idea mythbusted for all us ambitious, productive people who don’t get up at 5:30AM.

What did you do last week that was exceptional? What can you do next week that no one expects of you?

Some oldies-but-goodies: one of my all-time favourite books, a photo walk of patterns.

What To Pack For A Weekend Trip To Tokyo

Tokyo PackingRead my other packing guide, What To Pack to Backpack Through Europe here.

The Trip: This weekend, I’m spending 2 days in Tokyo, Japan! It’s going to be Spring-like weather, about 18 degrees Celsius both days. I’m travelling with just a purse because I love to travel light and because we’re going to be hitting the ground running from the moment we land on Saturday morning. We don’t want to have to stop to drop our things off at the hostel, so I’m going to be keeping everything I need on my person at all times.

Great Resources: I was inspired by these packing lists for carry-on travel in both summer and winter. I also love this post about how to pack for a trip in a purse. Lifehack has a few great tips for packing light for a weekend trip. And as always, I am inspired by the philosophy and attitude behind One Bag.

The List:

Clothes

Tokyo Packing 2

Our time in Tokyo is short, and really, 2 days in a city that big and that wonderful is not even close to enough to do it justice. But my friends and I are all of the belief that going even for 2 short days is a million times better than not going at all, so we’re planning to make the most of it. With that in mind, I wanted to bring clothes that are casual and comfortable, and shoes that I know I can walk in. I won’t be having many “costume changes”, but what I’m wearing isn’t the most important thing for me. I care way more about where I can go, and what I can see and take photos of and eat.

  • Khaki pants
  • Sleeveless top
  • Cardigan
  • Toms

Tokyo Packing 1

And these are the clothes I’ll be packing in my purse:

  1. Extra t-shirt
  2. Change of underwear

Tokyo Packing 3

  1. Jacket
  2. Sunglasses
  3. Fabric bag
  4. Purse (what I’ll be packing everything into)

Toiletries

Tokyo Packing 4

I’m keeping things intentionally minimalist on the toiletry front. We arrive Saturday morning in Tokyo and leave late Sunday afternoon, so I actually don’t need a lot.

  • Mascara
  • Concealer
  • Lip balm
  • Eyeliner
  • Contact case
  • Blush
  • Toothbrush & toothpaste
  • Deodorant (not pictured because I forgot)

Miscellaneous Necessities

Tokyo Packing 5

  1. Wallet
  2. Earphones + iPhone charger
  3. Granola bar
  4. iPhone for navigating
  5. Notebook + pen
  6. Passport, credit + debit cards, alien registration card, metro card
  7. Japanese yen
  8. Nikon D90 + 35mm f1.8 lens (not pictured because I was using it to take these photos!)

And there you have it! A weekend trip to Tokyo, packed into my purse. When I initially began planning for this trip, I was sure I needed to go out and buy a mid-sized backpack to fit all my stuff properly. But when I sat down and wrote out all the things I would actually need, I realized I could rely on my trusty purse to see me through.

Carry-on travel probably isn’t for everyone, but it has quickly become one of my all-time favourite things. Travelling can be so stressful, but I find that packing light reduces so much of that stress for me. And having less stress leaves me free to be flexible and spontaneous and to focus on other things, like finding the best green tea ice cream in town.

What do you pack for a weekend trip away? Do you love carry-on travel as much as I do? Do you have any tips for packing light?
