Book Club: March & April

Best Books of 2016 >> Life In Limbo

I absolutely love to read, and I love to share the books I like best with other people. Every few months here on the blog I choose my favourites from what I’ve read lately and write about them. As always, you can see everything I’m reading on my Goodreads profile. You can also check out what I’m reading at #stephlovestoread on Instagram.

At the end of March, I was lucky enough to go away to a lodge in the jungle for a few days on my own. It was obviously incredible in so many ways, but one unexpected benefit was getting so much reading done – as in, a book a day. It really showed me how distracted I’ve been getting lately, and mostly by social media, as sad as that is. Getting to spend a few days with my nose in a book was total bliss and reminded me of how much I love reading. My phone wallpaper is still Read A Book Instead, but I need to start following that motto a bit more often.

That said! I still got to read a few really great books over the past few months. Here are my recent faves:

Looking For the Light: April

Looking For the Light April >> Life In Limbo

This month it was pretty easy to find the light.

On my birthday I got treated to a beautiful lunch at a much-too-fancy restaurant, received kind and heartfelt messages from loved ones, and in the evening went over to my boyfriend’s parents’ house for a small family get-together. We were all sitting in the living room when all of a sudden, a four-piece mariachi band marched in, playing in all their glory. It was such a surprise and so thoughtful and sweet that I cried, and just felt so supported and loved by my Ecuadorian family.

Inspiration: April 29

Inspiration April 29 >> Life In Limbo

I signed up for The Skimm this week and it’s been so wonderful. It’s sharp and witty, and it makes the news easy to digest without being fear mongering or overly dramatic (the reasons I rarely read or watch traditional news).

A poignant, heartbreaking look at why we need to stop acting like a keyboard makes us untouchable. There are real humans on the other end (duhhhh).

I’m not a mother, but I found this vulnerable piece on mothering very powerful and very real.

The 26 List

The 26 List >> Life In Limbo

Every year around my birthday, I like to make myself a fun list – things I’d like to do or try before my next birthday. These are usually experiences I think I would be nice, or skills I’d like to learn, but not necessarily goals that need to be measured. I’ve never finished everything on my lists, but just having the list keeps me inspired and focused and gives me things to think about when I’m not sure what to tackle next. When I was 24, I checked off about 17/25 things, which is a ratio I’m pretty happy with.

This year, I took many of these list items off of a larger list I have, my list of 100 dreams that I came up with in February. The list of 100 dreams is an exercise I borrowed from Laura Vanderkam and I think it’s such a fun thing to do.
