I absolutely adored Tracy’s list of her favourite things and immediately wanted them all.

My friend Alex wrote very thoughtfully and well about the parallels between running and relationships (spoiler alert: they’re hard and they’re worth it).

Free People made a Youtube ad that I liked so much I let it play through til the end. It’s beautifully shot and it did a good job of making me want to go move.

Laci nails it yet again with her explanation of why it’s important not to dismiss the Isla Vista tragedy as only due to the actions of a madman. It may be partially that, but there’s a lot more going on that we should pay attention to.

I’ve been on a quest to eat more good, real food and this old post from Elise was helpful in giving me ideas. It’s what reminded me to make the nut granola!

I’ve been really loving this song by Michael Jackson and the new one from Drake (not suitable for work).

I read another John Green book in one day – they are impossible to put down, this time around it was Paper Towns – and I’m so excited for the TFIOS movie. I’ve been watching lots of clips and featurettes (I’m embarassed to say how many). Here’s one example.

Great advice from awesome women, compiled by Yes and Yes. From Amy Poehler: “The earlier you learn that you should focus on what you have, and not obsess about what you don’t have, the happier you will be. Try to keep your mind open to possibilities and your mouth closed on matters that you don’t know about. Limit your ‘always’ and your ‘nevers.'”

Two Instagram accounts I’m loving lately: beautifully sad poems by @beautaplin and just plain beautiful pictures from @sfgirlbybay.

Some oldies-but-goodies: peanut butter banana bread, what life looked like last June.

It’s another long weekend here in Korea! To celebrate, my friends and I are camping on the beach on a small island not too far away, and then duly admiring the huge sandcastle competition that’s taking place on the beach near my apartment. It should be a beautiful and relaxing few days, and I’m really excited. Happy weekend!

The photo is from my trip to the Amalfi coast last summer.

I adored this post about how the ways we take care of ourselves and show self-love are totally personal and unique! It was such a refreshing perspective and really made me re-think how I’m going to care for myself going forward.

Oh Dear Drea always posts photos of good, simple living. I think I must have pinned at least three pictures from this post alone to my vision board. Indian lunch feasts + a backyard hammock? Sign me up.

A really important piece about the importance of saying no. “You are allowed to not know. You are allowed to listen. You are allowed to say no. You are allowed to change your mind.”

In the aftermath of the Isla Vista tragedy, this open letter a mom wrote to her son was especially poignant and felt very important.

Dreamy picnics forever, please.

Short-but-sweet, wise and true advice from an 100-year old.

An adorable cartoon about the difference between empathy and sympathy, as explained by Brené Brown.

A reminder that we’re all doing better than we think at living life. I shared this with some friends earlier this week and we all needed to read it.

“Big sexy dreams are only accomplished one tiny, very unsexy step at a time.” I absolutely loved this article giving us all permission to be unsexy, every day. It really left an impact on me.

“…and yet there is a voice in my head saying “You are not doing enough. Try harder.”” Such an important topic – we have to stop beating ourselves up, stop feeling guilty, stop trying to do everything all at once.

Some things I’d like to make + eat: strawberry rhubarb quinoa crumble | one big cookie | literally any kind of pizza.

Two Instagram accounts I’ve been loving lately: @madeleinelumley posted some food photos this week that I immediately screengrabbed and that made me want to drop everything and go make them myself (bonus points because it’s all healthy food!). @brightbazaar just consistently posts beautiful, brightly-coloured pictured of lovely things.

Some oldies-but-goodies: how to make time for your passions, who are you doing a favour?

I can’t believe that it’s the second-last day of May. I can’t believe my childhood home is officially on the market! I can’t believe I’ve been in Korea 3 months. Clearly, time is flying. It sometimes feels like the days are passing slowly, but holy cow, when I think of all that’s happened between January 1st and today, I’m floored, I’m grateful, and I’m blown away. Life moves fast.

I know this weekend will move equally fast. On the agenda: beach yoga, a potluck, and hopefully lots of reading. I’m reading two great books right now, Thrive and The Master and Margarita. As always, I post photos from my adventures (or more often just of my feet in various locations) and you can see them by following me on Instagram @lifeinlimboblog!

PS. The first monthly newsletter is going out this morning! As I’ve mentioned before, I’ll send it out on the last Friday of every month with the highlights from the blog from that month. You can subscribe to the newsletter here. Thanks as always for reading.

Vision Board 2014 | My Lovely Life

Screen Shot 2014-05-29 at 10.56.30 AMA couple months ago I listened to an episode of After The Jump about living the life you want to live. If you’ve read this blog for any time at all, you’ll know that I really love these kinds of topics. I love learning more about living intentionally, designing your life, being proactive rather than passive and making the most of each moment.

I once dated a guy who lived in a very sparse apartment and always talked about how that time in his life didn’t really “count”, but that he was going to be really happy one day when he was richer/working his dream job/fill in the blank. If you’re like me, that kind of thinking makes you queasy. I haven’t spoken to him in years, but I hope he’s figured out by now that this is it. If you don’t learn how to be happy in this imperfect moment, you definitely won’t know how to be happy when you get to that “promised land” moment you’ve been waiting for.

That said, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with collecting inspiration and actively shaping your present and future into the life you want to have. As long as you’re not always waiting for some unspecified tomorrow, I think it’s awesome to take stock of how you want your future life to look and then work towards it starting from today.

On the episode I mentioned, they discussed the power of vision boards. The thought of a vision board, as cheesy as it might sound to some, immediately lit me up. The hosts were encouraging people to use magazines and just rip out anything that called to you without thinking too much about it. The key was to not place judgements on anything that attracted you for whatever reason.

Screen Shot 2014-05-29 at 11.00.35 AMI didn’t have magazines, but I did have Pinterest. So six weeks ago, I created a board and started adding photos to it that inspired me, made me feel happy, or evoked the kinds of feelings I wanted from my life. In order to let myself just go with it without judgement or holding myself back, I made the board secret. This helped because 1. I didn’t have to worry about other people’s judgements of what I was picking, and 2. when you pin to a secret board, it doesn’t come up on your own feed, so I would quickly forget what I’d chosen. I almost wanted to keep it a secret from myself, so that I wouldn’t be influenced by anything other than my immediate reactions to different pictures.

Screen Shot 2014-05-29 at 11.00.42 AMI looked at it this morning for the first time and basically just felt like saying “yep, exactly”. I’d forgotten most of the individual pictures, but collectively it all made complete sense to me. There are really no surprises, but it all adds up to what I personally would consider a good life. Here’s what my vision board says to me:

I want to eat good food. Freshly baked bread, soft serve ice cream, homemade chocolate chip cookies. I want to bake cakes for the people I love. I want a weekly pizza night.

I want to eat outside, al fresco, all the time. Food just tastes better that way.

I want to throw dinner parties outside that involve lots of fairy lights.

I want to watch a lot of sunsets. I want lots of happy hours.

Screen Shot 2014-05-29 at 11.00.10 AMI want to keep travelling the world and seeing beautiful places. I want road trips and boat rides and lots of laying on the beach reading books in exotic locales. I want to go to cottages on the lake and I want to learn how to surf in the ocean.

I want to live in a beautiful home. I don’t care that much about clothes – simple and classic will do, but it’s really not a priority. I want to be surrounded by colour and flowers and books.

I want simple traditions like pancakes on Sunday mornings and running around like crazy people in the backyard with a dog. I want a dog or two. Maybe a cat as well.

I want a partner, of course, and some babies. Not now, no way, but eventually. I want to be surrounded by friends and the people I love.

I want to live near the water and be in it as much as possible.

Screen Shot 2014-05-29 at 11.00.47 AMLike I said, nothing too surprising and nothing too original. I think a lot of people would be attracted to these same images and want some of the same things for their own lives. It’s kind of cool though what doesn’t show up here: expensive cars, jewelry or clothes, dinners at posh restaurants, dressing up for fancy parties, high heels of any kind. In a way it’s almost surprising to me how simple the life I want seems to be. It’s obtainable. It won’t cost me a lot of money. I can get there.

Of course, there also isn’t a lot in there about my career or creativity (there’s basically only a picture of a girl on a couch on her laptop, which sounds about right to me!). Maybe that’s because I don’t know yet what I want to do, or maybe it’s because I feel like my career isn’t the most important part of having a good life. It’s probably a little of both.

Screen Shot 2014-05-29 at 11.00.54 AMIn any case, it was a good exercise. It’s a visual example of what my priorities are for living well and happily! Of course my life will never be as picture-perfect as this Pinterest board, but that’s not the point. It’s just a good reminder that there’s a lot that I can focus on incorporating more of in my life and continue to work towards every day.

Even if vision boards sound a little new-agey to you, I think that they can be a really helpful tool for determing what your own personal version of a good life looks like. Give it a try and see what comes up!

Instant perspective when you’re having a bad day.

My new favourite Instagram account, if only because it’s trying to expose all the fake, perfectly curated lives that we see on social media. I’ve personally been thinking about this a lot lately and it’s been bothering me more and more. “People buy a box of macarons, or doughnuts, or an ice cream. They photograph it in front of some big landmark, like the Eiffel Tower and it’s like, Boom, I’ve got a successful Instagram post!”

A few years ago, one of our favourite restaurants in Montreal, Nantha’s, closed down. Happily, the chef Nantha Kumar is back! My friend Jake wrote a great profile of him and what he’s been up to, and it made me want to be back in Montreal again, pronto. Summers in Montreal are magic on another level and the article gave me big pangs of nostalgia. This will be the first summer in 3 years that I won’t spend in that beautiful place.

Dylan wrote about our beautiful sunset cruise last Sunday and simultaneously coined the term “sunset gratitude” which I couldn’t love more if I tried.

I don’t think I’ll ever need to stop reminding myself of this sentiment. “Let’s all say, “way to go” more often. Let’s be proud of each other, proud of ourselves and most importantly, content with the gift of our lives, right now and in this moment. It’s all too short and too fleeting to spend one more moment thinking you’re anything less than amazing.”

I’m sorry, but Joy the Baker made fancy jello shots. (I’m not sorry.)

Automating your life + batch processing = more time for the things you really care about. Awesome advice for mastering your mornings and your life.

“Don’t be cool. Ask stupid questions. Stay up late.” Yes and yes.

Two Instagram accounts I’ve been loving lately: @lerause is a friend of mine from when I lived in Montreal, and he takes such stunning photos of the city. @bakersroyale_naomi posts photos of food that make me feel like the cookie monster.

Some oldies-but-goodies: heart-shaped nail art (for your wall, not your fingers), today be gentle.
