Chewy Ginger-Molasses Cookies

The light in my best friends’ apartment is pure magic. Their windows look out over half of Montreal, and day or night it’s a gorgeous view. Twinkling stars, Supermoons, and fireworks at night; diffused, beautiful sunlight by day. Needless to say, I spend a lot of my time staring out their wall of windows and basking in the light reflected off of the seemingly endless mirrors that line the adjacent wall. It’s heaven.

And all that light makes the apartment absolutely perfect for dance parties, watching movies, doing your hair or makeup, and of course: baking and photographing the results. We spend the majority of our time doing all of the above. These cookies were created on a grey, dreary day made brighter by friends and food. What isn’t made brighter by friends and food?

Thanks Joy the Baker, I owe you an eternal debt for all the amazing recipes you’ve provided me, and all the laughs I get (often in public) while listening to the Joy the Baker Podcast. Also, your site re-design is fantastic, girl. These cookies were terrific: here is the recipe!

Due to a mysterious absence of granulated sugar, we couldn’t roll ours in sugar before baking. The cookies were still amazing, but I bet it wouldn’t have hurt to have the extra sparkly finish. We baked them for about 13 minutes, taking them out before they looked totally done – because that’s the key to chewy cookies! Take them out a tiny bit early and let them settle down into ooey-gooey-chewy-love. These cookies are a bit more cake-y than chocolate chip cookies, for example, but still end up having a nice chew.

Best enjoyed warm from the oven, looking out over grey skies, with your best friend. D’aww. Happy Wednesday everybody!

A Week In The Life

This year, I ‘participated’ in Ali Edwards’ A Week In The Life project. The gist of it is that you document a week in your life, complete with words, pictures, and scraps of paper – a mini scrapbook, a snapshot of your current life. I’ve always enjoyed documenting things, mainly through journalling, because I find myself so surprised when I look back over old entries and read about the details of my life back then. That’s probably why this project appealed to me last week. That, and I knew that it was ‘hell week’ for exams, and I would be needing some creative coping. As I’ve mentioned before, I have my own favourite ways of expressing my creativity, and I realize they might not appeal to everyone reading. I wanted to share my week anyhow! This was the week of April 23-29.

My first page has a few self-portraits, plus a photo of my zippered bag which was a total highlight of that week. The yellow graph paper holds some journalling about the week. The grey card just lists some of the things I liked during those 7 days. And the little tag has a few mottoes that kept popping up: capture magic, don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good enough, and the whole is greater that the sum of its parts. The photo at the bottom left is of me right after I got my sewing machine – I was so happy!

The back side of the title page has a bunch more self-portraits from throughout the week. I kept some sewing machine instructions, and wrote a little about the week. The right hand page is the day of the 23rd! I kept a to-do list, slotted in some photos, and wrote a bit about what I did that day.

More of the same – photos and journalling cards. The page for the 25th is one of my favourites, because I custom-made the layout using my sewing machine.

And I am obsessed with that photo of eggs! I also printed my stats from the Nike+ GPS app for my run on the 26th. The 27th was a quiet, study-filled day, and I like how the page and photos reflect that.

For the final 2 days, I didn’t have very much to add – only a handful of photos and very little else! I barely left my house those last few days before exams. So I packaged them into one page, and I like how it turned out.

I love this album. It was really fun to make, because I got to play around with paper and photos. And it is fun to look back at, because it keeps track of all the little details of everyday life. My album certainly doesn’t look like some of the other Week In The Life albums, mostly because I’m a bit amateurish, especially with this new plastic photo-sleeve type of scrapbooking. But that’s okay – I did my own thing! And I had lots of fun with it. It was a welcome distraction after a long night of studying.

I hope sincerely that today (and all days) your life is great, your life is grand, and that you smile to yourself when you walk down the street today for no reason except for that life is amazing. I hope you laugh a lot and get 20 hugs. I hope you get everything checked off your to-do list and see a friend and start or finish a book and enjoy some nice weather. Count your blessings and keep on smiling! Happy Monday.

6/10: Zippered Bag

This a perfectly imperfect project, but it’s one of my favourites so far. Although, when I think about all the things I’ve made this year, I’m thrilled. I now have sweet little handmade things all over my apartment and it really makes it a lot more homey. But I think the reason I love this funny little bag so much is because it’s my first ever complete sewing project, and it was both easier and more adorable than I thought it would be.

Granted, the “handiwork” on my bag might be pretty shoddy – the lining isn’t quite lined up, the stitches might be a little uneven… it’s probably enough to make seasoned seamstresses cringe. In fact, I was lucky enough to hang out in a really cool boutique today and was awed to discover that the owner sews all the clothes herself; it was all so beautifully made! Even though I doubt I’ll ever have her level of skill, it was still very inspiring for me, and it made me want to improve as much as I can. I am considering making this very simple skirt/dress next, as a foray into garment sewing. We shall see.

I’ve been hoping to make this bag for a few months now. In fact, when I was home over reading week, I cut the fabric (probably one reason this project came together so quickly at the end) and found a zipper, just in time to discover that my mom’s old sewing machine was broken. The bag project was shelved, until my mom gave me my own sewing machine for my birthday! I toted the cut fabric pieces and zipper home with me after my birthday weekend, and on a study break last week, I created this end product.

All told, it probably took me about forty-five minutes of sewing, because I was very green about it, and wanted to follow the steps very carefully. I used this tutorial, omitting the iron-on or painted aspects that she discusses. I just followed along as best I could with the actual sewing/cutting instructions. And you know what? Despite the slight wonkiness of my fabric and the very limited reach of my skills, it still worked out! Like I said, I was completely surprised. I went into it thinking that if it completely flopped, it didn’t matter because it was only a few scraps of old fabric and some wasted time. I think that not trying to be perfectionistic takes some of the pressure off, and makes it easier to go with the flow and try your best. That being said, I think this is an amazing beginner’s project – it is apparently quite tricky to mess up.

I haven’t quite decided what I’ll use it for yet. Pencil case? Toiletries bag? Don’t know. I also don’t know how long it’ll hold up – I’ve read blog posts already about how these little pouches like to break down pretty fast. But hey! This was a project to learn from, and learn I did. All it means is that there’s more to come in the future! You can check out some of the fun sewing projects I’m considering here on Pinterest.

And with this, I’m at 6 DIY projects for the year! I’m loving it so much though, I may end up with more than 10 by the end of 2012. I wouldn’t complain about it! See the rest of the DIY projects here.

Ps. Turning it inside-out to reveal the “final product” is totally the best part.
