001: Introduction to the Life In Limbo Podcast

Welcome to the very first episode of my new podcast! As you’ll soon hear in the episode’s introduction, the Life In Limbo podcast is about building a life you love on the foundation of what’s most important to you.

In the very first episode, I’m sharing the reasons why I wanted to start this show in the first place. What’s it for? What’s the point? What am I exploring here? I’ll share more in the episode itself, but the gist is that each week I’ll chat with an interesting person to explore about how we can stay connected to our personal values, measure what matters most to us, listen to our own voices, and create a life we love. You can listen to the episode in the player below or wherever you get your podcasts!

Shownotes:

It’s never easy to start something new, and this podcast has been a loooong time coming. I would absolutely love to hear what you think of the first episode in the comments below!

I was lucky enough to see a conversation between Misha Glouberman and David McRaney of You Are Not So Smart this past weekend and left with pages of notes on all the interesting things they discussed. A standout section was about the LA LGBT Leadership Lab and the amazing work they’re doing to help change the world. I plan to watch some of the conversations they’ve had that are up on their YouTube channel to see people’s minds change in real time.

I also saw Mouthpiece this week and oh my goodness. If it’s coming to a city near you, please go and see it. So powerful, so interesting, so many tears, so much talent.

100 ways to be an ally to people of colour. Good, practical, awesome advice!

This is my very favourite thing to do, and I’m so happy that the weather is finally allowing for me to do it again. Thank you to all my phone buddies!

Some of the things that might be missing from your job description but are crucial parts of your job. This reminds me a lot of what Amanda Ashford talked about during her talk for Creative Mornings last week.

Love the idea of creating an internal scorecard for how you choose who to work with. Such a fun (and helpful!) strategy.

I liked this fun and kind of different ice breaker question. My answers would be: 1. Pretending to tap dance/hip hop dance/Irish dance. 2. Writing for social media.

I liked this little productivity guide, and my favourite part was this: Stay on paper as long as possible. Sketch and write things out long-hand, possibly even emails.

One of my clients, With/out Pretend, created a new monthly newsletter that was sent out this week! I’m really proud that I got to be a part of it.

Hi and thanks for reading! This week was a sad one here in Toronto as you may have seen in the news. Gratefully I don’t personally know anyone directly affected by the attack, but it left a mark on all of us. I am sending lots of love and light to anyone who might need it this week. This weekend I’m so thankful I’ll get to spend some much-needed time with my loved ones and soak them in. Life is precious. xo.

The Cobbler Has No Shoes

At last week’s Tuesday’s Together meeting, I mentioned that ever since I started my business, my website had gotten very little attention and I didn’t have a mailing list set up for my own clients. That month’s expert speaker said, “I get it, the cobbler has no shoes and all that.” She then went on to say that her own business website had been considered a “known issue” in her company for years, despite the business being successful and thriving.

I’m not a person who believes you have to get every duck into a neat row before you can launch your service or products. In fact, I think that your best ideas won’t and actually can’t come until you’ve started the process, worked with a couple customers, and started to see what isn’t working and could be better. I like to keep my business fairly nimble so that I can pivot easily, change things up, offer new packages and work with new businesses. For example, I’ve run my business successfully for two years and I have yet to print business cards. (Which is a good thing, because I didn’t know what exactly to call what I was doing until about 30 seconds ago.)

That said, I also have no interest in being a shoeless cobbler. I want to help myself and my own business grow and thrive just as much as I help my clients grow theirs. That’s part of what my new “think bigger time” is for: putting the systems in place that will support me moving forward, and dreaming big dreams about what things might look like 5 years down the line. And this goes for every type of business: so often, we aren’t offering to ourselves what we offer to others.

Even though I’m proud that my business has been sustainable without all the trappings of Business Legitimacy (barf), I also think it’s important to recognize the moment where you do have new shoes to fill – pun most definitely intended. There comes a time when you need to step up to a new level and decide that the way things were will no longer be the way things are. Even if they’re “working”! Even if they’re “fine”! If parts of your business feel clunky and tedious and unsustainable, they probably are. And by deciding to improve them, you become more confident in what you’re offering.

It’s important to remember that you don’t fix things just so that other people will think you’re a professional at what you do, but so that you will start to see yourself that way. When you turn pro, at first just through your actions and decisions, your confidence in yourself follows suit.

I’m working on making myself shoes, slowly but surely. What are your shoes to make? What part of your offering are you not giving to yourself?

My friend Kate told me about Paul Jarvis this week and I was instantly obsessed. All his websites and programs are so clean and beautiful and look so helpful! I can’t wait to learn more about the Creative Class. The day after, Sarah Von Bargen posted this article by him about consumption spirals that I loved. Apparently I was meant to encounter Paul this week.

How to love your partner the way they actually want to be loved instead of leading with “Toddler Brain”.

Jonathan Van Ness teaches us how to have a self-care moment: “What can you do to start to get there without having to do so much? How can you get to a destination without spending everything to get there? It’s a moment—just getting that flavor without necessarily having to go so hard.”

Reminder: What you resist persists.

My search for the ultimate CRM for my small business continues! But I am pretty sure I’m going to go with Dubsado: it has such great reviews, all the features I want, and is said to have some of the best customer service around. I’m excited to dig into more of its capability.

This is such a beautiful piece: How Do We Write Now?

Yes to this! “The most effective way to shake things up is to move across the world. Pick a place that’s most unlike what you know, and go. Eventually you’ll realize that your beliefs were not correct — they were just the quaint local culture of where you grew up. You are a product of your environment.”

It’s been another week that’s completely flown by with meetings and emails and work. That said, it’s had lots of lovely elements too: splitting a yummy pizza, pulling tarot cards on a sunny morning, talking about business with a group of cool people, brainstorming on big pieces of paper taped to the wall, visiting my friend Kathryn’s gorgeous studio (pictured above) and having soul chats. I love this life I’m living and feel lucky for it every single day. I hope you have a wonderful weekend too! xo.
